Anti Wrinkle Injections

BOTOX®

Botox®  has revolutionised aesthetic medicine. It's easy application and quick results have brought cosmetic medicine into the main stream and made it the number one cosmetic procedure for both women and men across the globe.

BOTOX®, what is it?

BOTOX® is a natural protein chemically derived from bacteria in much the same way that penicillin is derived from mould. BOTOX® is simply a brand name for  Botulinum  Type A.

How does it work?

BOTOX® acts by blocking acetylcholine, a chemical transmitter that causes muscle contraction leading to the temporary blocking of the nerve impulses that contract the tiny muscles that are responsible for expression lines and wrinkles. The subsequent result is relaxation of the facial muscles which over time may have caused significant wrinkles to develop. This then allows the distressed skin to rest resulting in a softer, relaxed, youthful look.

The History of Botox®

Botulinum toxins were first researched in the late 1960s to treat neurological disorders. Botox was first approved by the FDA in 1989 to treat eye muscle disorders (blepharospasm, uncontrollable blinking, and strabismus, crossed eyes). In 2000, it was approved to treat cervical dystonia (a disorder that causes severe neck and shoulder contractions). As an unusual side effect of the eye disorder treatment, doctors observed that Botox® softened the frown lines between the eyebrow.

FDA Approval In April 2002.

The FDA was satisfied by its review of studies indicating that Botox® reduced the severity of frown lines for up to 120 days and approved the drug.

Is BOTOX® safe?

BOTOX® is well established having been approved by health authorities in over 70 countries. It has been used in hospitals for many years to treat a wide range of conditions in adults and children. These include eye problems, migraine, tight neck muscles and spasms. It has also been used cosmetically for almost 20 years.

I would like a BOTOX® treatment, am I suitable?

Normally patients between the ages of 18 and 65 are suitable. Older patients may also have BOTOX® treatments, but the results may not be quite as good.

Is BOTOX® available for both men and women?

Treating women is common, but more and more men are having BOTOX® to make them look and feel more relaxed and rested.

BOTOX® Treatment for Men

While the majority of BOTOX® patients are women, many men are seeking the treatment as well. BOTOX® injections for men are a very subtle way to improve the appearance of the face, and as the procedure takes so little time, a busy man can conceivably have the procedure done on his lunch break and head right back to the office.

Who is not suitable for BOTOX® treatment?

We would not treat a patient under the age of 18, pregnant and breastfeeding women and those with certain musculoskeletal conditions such as Myasthenia Gravis and Lambert Eaton Syndrome. Any other contraindications or cautions can be discussed at your consultation with our Nurse Practitioner.

What are the common areas for treatment?

BOTOX® can be used to relax the frown lines (glabellar region), crow’s feet and forehead lines. In Marie’s experienced hands it can also be used on its own or in conjunction with dermal fillers like Juvederm Ultra to enhance the mid and lower face. We are able to treat drooping mouth corners; perioral lines also known as smokers’ lines, poppy chins, gummy smiles and overactive masseter muscles which give a square appearance to the lower face.

Preparing for BOTOX® Treatment

There is little involved in preparing for a BOTOX® treatment, other than being upfront and honest with your physician when you initially discuss the treatment. Sometimes referred to as a “lunchtime procedure” because of the short amount of time needed for the injections, BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments require very little preparation or recovery time.

Is there any downtime?

No. You may return to work or normal activities immediately following treatment. It is recommended that for 4 hours after treatment, you avoid vigorous exercise, do not lie down, and do not massage the area treated.

How long can I expect the results to last?

The results from undergoing a treatment of BOTOX® become apparent over the first 5-10 days and usually last on average of 3-4 months. It is administered via tiny needles injected into the skin. The procedure takes just a few minutes and discomfort is minimal. No additional anaesthesia is necessary.

Will my facial expressions continue to look natural?

Although the results are visible, a treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you "had work done." The muscle activity that causes frown lines between the brows is simply reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows.

What happens as the treatment begins to wear off?

As the Botox® Cosmetic wears off you will begin using the muscles that had been relaxed with the treatment. Your wrinkles will begin to reappear, but frequently they are not as deep or as noticeable. With repeat treatments, the effects tend to last longer requiring fewer injections.

Will my lines look worse if I choose not to continue treatments?

No. Your lines gradually revert to their pre-treatment appearance.

BOTOX® for sweating problems (Axillary Hyperhidrosis)

BOTOX® can also reduce sweating, it is common for active, ambitious and style conscious men and women to consider BOTOX® treatment in the armpit area.

The Look you want to achieve

BOTOX® is a very effective treatment, but it is important that as it is a prescription only product. At BotoxBotox our Nurse Practitioner, Marie Dolan has a complete understanding of skin and muscle structures, with years of experience of using BOTOX® she prides herself on delivering maximum and effective results from this procedure resulting in a natural, relaxed look..

Botox®

Botox® is the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure performed. In the year 2003 there were 2,272,080 botox® injections performed.

BOTOX®, whats in the bottle?

Each vial of BOTOX® contains 100 Units (U) of Clostridium botulinum type A neurotoxin complex, 0.5 milligrams of Albumin Human, and 0.9 milligrams of sodium chloride in a sterile, vacuum-dried form without a preservative.

When Botox injections may not be a good option.

Not all facial wrinkles benefit from Botox injections, however. Botox won't reverse wrinkling caused by sun damage. Also, it's less desirable to treat the lines around your mouth because muscles in this area are needed for eating and talking. Your skin type, skin thickness and degree of wrinkling all play a role in determining whether these injections are effective for you.
